Financial market: Average loan sizes for dwellings

Average loan sizes for dwellings

New lending commitments for owner-occupier dwelling purchase and construction indicate borrowing activity across states and how this is changing over time.

Data are sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publication Lending Indicators.

A lending commitment is a firm offer to provide finance that has been accepted by the borrower, following loan approval and issuance of a contract or letter of offer.

Data relate to average loan sizes for new lending commitments for owner‑occupied dwellings, including loans for construction and the purchase of new and existing dwellings. Loans for land, alterations and additions are excluded.

From December 2024, the Lending Indicators publication shifted from monthly to quarterly reporting, which is reflected in the data presented.

See the ABS publication for more information, including data quality notes. Data for this visualisation are drawn from the Lending Indicators web report figure ‘Average loan sizes for owner‑occupier dwellings, original, by state’.
