Financial market: Lending commitments to first home buyers

Lending commitments to first home buyers

New lending commitments to first home buyers indicate borrowing activity among first home buyers and changes in this over time.

Data are sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publication Lending Indicators.

A lending commitment is a firm offer to provide finance that has been accepted by the borrower, following loan approval and issuance of a contract or letter of offer.

Data relate to lending by significant lenders for housing finance, including loans for owner‑occupied and investment dwellings where the borrower is a first home buyer.

Data are presented as seasonally adjusted and trend estimates. Trend estimates were suspended during the COVID‑19 period and reinstated by the ABS from October 2022 following stabilisation of lending patterns.

First home buyer lending series were temporarily suspended in July and August 2023 due to data reporting issues and reinstated from September 2023, with revisions back to January 2022.

From December 2024, the Lending Indicators publication shifted from monthly to quarterly reporting, which is reflected in the data presented.

See the ABS publication for more information, including data quality notes. Data for this visualisation are drawn from the Lending Indicators data downloads (tables 24 and 25).
