Household finances: Capital gains from real estate by entity
Capital gains and losses from real estate indicate investment returns and how housing market performance is changing over time.
Data are sourced from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) publication Taxation Statistics.
A capital gain or loss is the difference between the cost of acquiring and maintaining a property and the amount received when it is sold.
Data relate to capital gains and losses on real estate reported by individuals, companies and funds for each income year since 2012–13. Statistics are based on capital gains tax schedules processed by 31 October of the following year and may not be complete.
See the ATO publication for more information, including data quality notes. Data for this visualisation are drawn from Taxation Statistics 2022–23 (CGT – table 1).
