The number of individuals with a financial interest in a rental property indicates patterns in rental property ownership and investment over time.

Data are sourced from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) publication Taxation Statistics, based on individual income tax returns processed up to the lodgement deadline following the income year (usually 31 October).

A property interest includes owning a property alone or with others, or for part of the year (for example, if the property was bought or sold during the year).

These data may be incomplete, as some returns are processed later or not included.
