Net overseas migration indicates population change through international migration and how this is changing over time.

Data are sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Overseas Migration publication.

Net overseas migration (NOM) measures the difference between people arriving in and departing from Australia. Arrivals and departures data are also presented by state and territory, visa type and major groupings.

These statistics are compiled primarily using data from the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. A person is considered a usual resident of Australia if they have resided (or expect to reside) in Australia for 12 months or more over a 16-month period. Prior to 1 July 2006, a usual resident was defined as residing in Australia for a continuous 12-month period.
