Population: Australian population change - Local Government Area
Population estimates by Local Government Area (LGA) indicate the size and annual change of the population at the local level.
Data are sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publication Regional Population.
Estimated resident population (ERP) is the official measure of population, based on Census counts of usual residence (excluding short‑term overseas visitors), adjusted for undercount and Australian residents temporarily overseas. Population change is calculated by adding natural increase (births minus deaths) and net overseas migration to the population at the beginning of each period.
LGA population estimates are prepared using Census data and updated in intercensal years by accounting for components of population change. Historical estimates are revised when geographic boundaries change.
National and state/territory totals in this visualisation are derived from the sum of sub‑state components and may differ from published ABS figures, which include adjustments for population movements not captured at the sub‑state level. Users requiring precise national or state/territory estimates should refer to the ABS source publication.
See the ABS publication for more information, including data quality notes. Data for this visualisation are drawn from the Regional Population data downloads (Population estimates and components by LGA, 2024 to 2025).
